Maine Aquaculture Sector Expanding

Whilst growth in aquaculture has been sluggish across most of the US, Maine has been much different. The aquaculture sector in Maine has been growing rapidly and shows no sign of slowing. Maine's aquafarms employ around 700 people year round and are making about $100 million worth of product from 25 different species -- the top producers being salmon, mussels, and oysters.

A dutch firm is now planning on adding Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola lalandi) to the mix of species produced in Maine. The firm plans to develop a large land based facility to produce approximately 6000 metric tons annually.
